FIRST NATIONS ART //

As home to the world’s oldest culture, I love seeing the spotlight being shone on the history, diversity and creativity of First Nations people.

In a collaboration that was supposed to be a part of the Rising festival, Yarra Trams have transformed six Melbourne trams into pieces of moving art with support from Creative Victoria and Public Transport Victoria

Whilst the Rising festival was cancelled due to the Melbourne lockdown, the trams will still circulate throughout the city for the next 12 months.

The thought provoking expressions of art by six talented First Nations artists cover themes around the environment and caring for Country, journeying and family, and the history and cultural heritage of First Peoples in the state. The pictured is by Aunty Zeta Thomson (Wurundjeri/Yorta Yorta), an Elder, artist, cultural teacher and advocate.

These trams will add vibrancy to the city and celebrate Indigenous history and I really believe that this type of contemporary expression of the First Nations culture is important to our national identity.

Trams with moving public art is one way to contribute to the creative fabric of our cities, The O initiative is another.
